Always in Action – Thala Ajith Exclusive Interview

Ajith Kumar whose Arrambam is set for a Diwali release gets talking to Nikhil Raghavan about being a director’s actor, his upcoming production Veeram and his passion for racing, flying and photography

Billa (2007) was a landmark film for Ajith Kumar — a film that brought together director Vishnuvardhan and Ajith. The duo, during the making of the film, made up their minds to come together again sometime soon. Meanwhile, Vishnuvardhan got busy with his own projects and Ajith completed director Venkat Prabhu’s Mankatha, another huge hit, and Billa 2. The two have joined forces again and the result: Arrambam, a movie slated for a grand Diwali release. Ajith is busy with director Siva’s Veeram getting ready for an early 2014 release. Excerpts from an interview with the actor:

How would you describe your roles in Arrambam and Veeram?

The best part of both films is the diversity of roles. In Arrambam, my character is very stylish, on the lines of Billa and Mankatha. I play a mean guy —imagine a politically incorrect character. As with all A. M. Rathnam films, there will be a strong social message. Some of the issues dealt with are universal in nature.

As for Veeram, I play a rustic character, attired in a dhoti most of the time. I have enjoyed doing this action-oriented role; I think the last time I did such a role was in Attagasam.

What is the one thing that you look for in a role?

I consider myself a professional actor, paid to do the job — to enact the role as conceived by the director. Fortunately, in most of the films I have done so far, the scripts carried roles that suited me. I have progressed from youthful, romantic roles to action and now more mature ones. I do believe in the bound script but it doesn’t always happen. Sometimes you have to trust a director’s capability. I look for compatibility with the producer as well as the director. At the end of the day, we are all here to give our best and for me, there should be job satisfaction.

Are you a director’s actor? How much do you contribute to a film or a role?

I am driven by the director’s vision. As an actor, I do offer suggestions. I think if we use our talent to improvise within the area of acting, without infringing on the director’s creativity, it proves beneficial to the film. When there are no egos to tackle on the set, it makes life wonderful.

What has given you satisfaction — playing a romantic hero, an action hero or an actor with negative shades?

I have done my share of romantic films in my youth. I have grown older and insist that I will only play roles that suit my present looks, salt and pepper hair included. Luckily, Mankatha and Billa 2 came along. Now, in Arrambam and Veeram, the trend continues. Remember, doing characters with a slight negative shade does not take away the romance and fight out of you! I try to do roles I am comfortable with. Work is a motivation for me, irrespective of the character I play.

Health and fitness issues have plagued you in recent times. Despite the risks involved, why do you prefer to do most of the stunts yourself?

Accidents and injuries are part of this profession — call them occupational hazards. Thankfully, I have had good doctors who have helped me recover fast. Health and fitness are issues for anyone in any vocation. As for stunts, to an extent, we have to do them ourselves to lend them authenticity. Of course, there are professional stuntmen who are paid to do sequences and we as actors have always respected them. Many a time, they have come to our rescue too. Today’s audiences are very discerning and can spot a badly done stunt scene with doubles. So we have to give them their money’s worth when they come to watch our films.

Your love for speed and safe driving skills is a curious combination.

I have been both a bike and car racer since I was 18. I love speed but with caution. Having raced in India and abroad under internationally renowned drivers, I have learnt the art and the need to adopt safe driving practices. Today, when I ride my superbikes even on the road, I ensure I wear a helmet, gloves, boots and, on long drives, an overall. I plan to launch a website that will be updated with lots of advice, guidance and videos taken during my road trips on my two superbikes – BMW and Aprilia.

Issues related to society, environment… which is closest to your heart?

I believe if you are an honest taxpayer, that itself is a huge contribution to society. It’s the responsibility of the various government departments to use the taxpayers’ money for the benefit of society and the environment. I do my best for my family and personal staff. We co-exist — as much as they depend on me for their livelihood, my family and I depend on them too. I would not like to publicise my philanthropic activities.

Besides acting, you’re passionate about flying, aero-modelling and photography.

Due to several reasons, I couldn’t acquire a private pilot licence. I did the next best thing — aero-modelling. I have a collection of model aircraft which I fly from a private airstrip near Chennai. Post Arrambam and Veeram, I plan to undergo a long-pending surgery to repair a torn ligament in my leg. After this, I will go abroad on a six-month vacation to not just recuperate but also to indulge in aero-modelling at one of the leading centres. Photography is a passion and I think I have an eye for the unusual. I do not do this for any commercial reason, though.

எந்தத்துறையை எடுத்தாலும் பிரபலங்கள்(celebrities) என்ற நிலையில் இருப்பவர்களின் சுதந்திரம் வரையரைக்குட்பட்டதாகவே இருக்கும். ரசிகர்கள்,மீடியாக்கள் எப்போதுமே அவர்களை சுற்றியே வட்டமிட்டுக்கொண்டிருக்கும். இது தமிழ் சினிமாத்துறையில் கொஞ்சம் அதிகப்படியாகவே இருக்கிறதென்று சொல்லலாம். தமிழ் ரசிகர்கள் சினிமா, நடிகர்கள்,நடிகைகள்,இசையமைப்பாளர்கள் என அத்துறையில் இருப்பவர்களை மற்றைய துறைகளிலுள்ள பிரபலங்களை காட்டிலும் இவர்களில் அதிகப்படியான கிரேசியை கொண்டிருக்கின்றனர் என்பது உண்மையே! அதிலும் ரஜினி,அஜித் போன்ற முன்னணி நடிகர்களுக்கு எப்பவுமே ரசிகர்கள் மத்தியில் ஒரு கிரேஸி இருக்கும். இவர்களின் ஒவ்வொரு அசைவுமே மீடியாக்களால் உன்னிப்பா அவதானிக்கப்பட்டு அவைகளை மக்களுக்கு தெரியப்படுத்தி அம்மீடியாக்கள் மக்கள் மத்தியில் பிரபல்யமடைகின்றன.

சில காலங்களுக்கு முன்னரெல்லாம் இதில் வசமாக மாட்டுப்பட்டவர் சூப்பர்ஸ்டார்தான். இவருக்கு மக்கள் மத்தியில் உள்ள செல்வாக்கை சாதகமாக பயன்படுத்தி இவர் தும்மினாலும் அதை பெருதுபடித்தி மீடியாக்கள் காசு சம்பாதித்துக்கொண்டன. தற்போது சூப்பர்ஸ்டார் வெளியே தலைகாட்டுவதை குறைத்துவிட்டதால் மீடியாக்களின் அடுத்த இலக்கு ரஜினிக்கு அடுத்தாற்போல் செல்வாக்குள்ள அஜித் மீதுதான். இரண்டு நாட்களுக்குமுதல் பரபரப்பா பேசப்பட்ட ஒரு விடயம் "படப்பிடிப்பின் ஓய்வு நேரங்களில் மொபைலில் ஆத்திசூடி படிக்கும் அஜித்". மொபைல்ல ஒரு விடயத்தை படிக்கிறதுக்கும் சுதந்திரம் இல்லையா? சில்லறை வெப்சைட்டுக்களில் மட்டுமல்லாது behindwoods.com (link) போன்றவற்றிலும் இதை பெரியவிடயமாக போட்டார்கள். என்ன பிரச்சினை எண்டால் இதுபோன்ற தேவையில்லாத மீடியாக்களின் புகழ்ச்சி அஜித்தை பிடிக்காது என்று சொல்லித்திரியும் கொஞ்சப்பேருக்கு ரெம்பவே கடுப்பேத்திவிட்டது. அவர்களுக்கு ஏற்கனவே உள்ள கடுப்பு என்னவென்றால் அஜித் மற்றையோருக்கு உதவி செய்யும்போது அதை ஒருபோதும் பப்ளிசிட்டி பண்ணுறேலை. அதனால் பலருக்கு அந்த செய்திகள் காதுக்கு போவதில்லை, அவர்களின் நினைப்பு என்னவென்றால் அஜித் கோடி கோடியா சம்பாதிக்கிறார் ஆனா ஒருத்தருக்கும் உதவி செய்வதில்லை என்று. மாறாக விஜய் எப்பிடிஎண்டால் தனது படங்கள் ரிலீஸ் ஆகும் நேரங்களில்(மட்டும்) சில உதவித்திட்டங்களை வழங்குவார், ஆனா வழங்குறதுக்கு ஒரு மாதத்துக்கு முதல்லே இதுபற்றி பில்டப் விட தொடங்கிடுவார். இதுபோல சூர்யாவும் அகரம் பவுண்டேசன் மூலமாக அநாதரவான குழந்தைகளுக்கு உதவி செய்து வருகின்றார். ஆனால் யார் என்ன செய்தாலும் அஜித்தைதான் எல்லோருமே தூக்கிவைச்சு கொண்டாடுறார்கள். இதுதான் அஜித் எதிர்ப்பாளர்களின் ஆதங்கம்.

Billa 2 படம் ரிலீசாவதுக்கு சில நாட்களின் முன்னர் அஜித் சத்தியம் தியேட்டருக்கு சென்றபோது அவர் என்ன நிற டீசேட் போட்டிருந்தார், ஹெயார் ஸ்டைல், போட்டிருந்த கண்ணாடி எண்டதையெல்லாம் விபரமாக செய்தியா போட்டிருந்தார்கள் behindwoods இனர். அது மட்டுமல்ல ஜி.வி.பிரகாஸ்-சைந்தவி திருமணத்துக்கு சம்பந்தப்பட்ட அரசியல்,சினிமா தரப்பினர்களுக்கு அழைப்பு விடுக்கப்பட்டாலும் முதல்வர் ஜெயலலிதா மற்றும் அஜித்துக்கு நேரில் சென்று அழைப்பு விடுத்ததை தனி செய்தியாக எல்லா இணையத்தளங்களும் வெளியிட்டன. இது மட்டுமல்ல சூட்டிங் ஸ்பொட்டில் அஜித்தால் வழங்கப்படும் பிரியாணி முதல் கொண்டு அஜித் மற்றைய சகபாடிகளுடன் எவ்வாறு பழகுறார் என்றதுவரை எல்லாமே மீடியாக்களால் புட்டுப்புட்டு வைக்கப்படுகின்றன. யாராவது ஒருவருடன் அஜித் கதைத்தாலே போதும் அவர் என்ன கதைத்தார் என்பதை மீடியாக்களுக்கு கதைகேட்டவர் சொல்லி பப்ளிசிட்டி ஆக்கிடுவார். இதே மற்றைய நடிகர்களுக்கு இப்பிடியான செய்திகள் வருவதில்லை. இதெல்லாம் அஜித்துக்கு சமுகத்தில் உள்ள செல்வாக்கால்தான். எனினும் இது எங்குபோய் முடியப்போகுதோ தெரியவில்லை! ஓவர் புகழ்ச்சி என்ன வினையை கொண்டுவரப்போகுதோ தெரியவில்லை. என்னதான் இவ்வாறு அஜித் புராணத்தை மீடியாக்கள் பாடினாலும் படங்கள் வெளியாகி முக்கிய தருணங்களில் எதிர்த்தரப்பினரின் பண மற்றும் இதர செல்வாக்குக்கும், அவர்களின் கையேந்தல்களுக்கும் கட்டுப்பட்டு அஜித்துக்கு பாதகமாகவே மீடியாக்கள் செயற்படுகின்றன. அஜித் படங்கள் ரிலீசானால் அதனுடன் என்னதான் மொக்கை படங்கள் வெளிவந்தாலும் அதையே சண் டீவி டாப் டென்னில் முதலில் போடுவார்கள். வரலாறு-வல்லவன் இல் வல்லவனை முதலிலும் பரமசிவன்-ஆதி இல் ஆதியை முதலும்.... இப்பிடி சொல்லிடே போகலாம். அதுமட்டுமல்ல முன்னர் சண் மியுசிக்கில் அஜித் பட பாடல்களை யாராவது கேட்டால் அழைப்பை துண்டித்துவிடுவார்கள். ஆனா இதே சண்ணுக்கு பட விநியோகஸ்தத்தில் ரீ.என்றி குடுத்ததே அஜித்தின் மங்காத்தாதான். sify.com போன்ற இணையத்தளங்கள் வரலாறு படம் வந்து நிறைய நாட்களுக்கு பின்னரே வேறு வழியில்லாமல் பிளக்பஸ்ட்டர் எண்டு அறிவித்தது.ஆனா சுறா வந்தபோது மூன்றாவது நாளே ஹிட் எண்டு அறிவித்துவிட்டார்கள். பிற்பாடுதான் திருத்தத்தை செய்தார்கள். இப்படியா மீடியாக்களின் ஓர வஞ்சகத்தனத்தையும் சொல்லிட்டே போகலாம்.

ஒரு நிதர்சனமான உண்மை என்னவென்றால் சண்,விஜய் டிவிகளை பொறுத்தவரையில் தங்கள் டீவிக்கு யார் வருகை தந்து பேட்டியோ இல்லை நிகழ்வுகளில் பங்குபற்றுகிரார்களோ அவர்களையே தூக்கிவைத்து கொண்டாடுவார்கள். அஜித் இதற்கேல்லாம் செவிசாய்க்காததும் அவர் ஓரங்கட்டப்படுவதட்கு ஒரு காரணமாச்சு. எனினும் சமுகவலைத்தளங்கள் வந்ததின் பிற்பாடு சண் டீவி,விஜய் டீவி போன்றவற்றின் இப்பாகுபாடு சாதாரண ரசிகர்கள் பெரும்பாலானோருக்கு தெரியவந்துவிட்டது. இப்பவெல்லாம் சண்ணில் ஒளிபரப்பாகும் டாப் டென் படங்களின் வரிசையை யாராவது நம்புறார்களா?? காமேடியாய்தான் பார்கிறார்கள். ஆகவே வேறு வழியில்லாமல் முன்னர் உள்ளதைவிட அஜித்துக்கு கொஞ்சம்கூடுதலாக முக்கியத்துவம் வழங்குகிறார்கள். தற்போது புதிதாக என்ன நடந்ததெண்டே தெரியவில்லை, விகடன் இணையத்தளம் அஜித்துக்கு எதிராக கடுமையாக செயற்பட்டு வருகிறது. கேலிச்சித்திரம் முதற்கொண்டு அண்மையில் நடந்த வாக்கெடுப்பிலும் அஜித்தை(39%) விஜய்(44%) வென்றதாக அறிவித்துள்ளது. நேர்மையான வாக்கெடுப்பில் வெற்றி பெற்றால் சல்யுட் அடிக்கலாம். ஆனா இந்த வாக்கெடுப்பில் ஒருவர் எத்தனைமுறை வேண்டுமானாலும் வாக்களிப்பதற்கான கள்ளவழிகள் இருக்கின்றன என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது. இதை உண்மையென்று விஜய் ரசிகர்கள் போட்ட அலம்பல்கள் தாங்க முடியவில்லை.இதை உண்மை என்று சொல்பவர்களுக்கு இதே 2011 ஆம் ஆண்டில் நடந்த வாக்கெடுப்பில் அஜித் 68%  வாக்குகளை பெற்றாரென்பதும் குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது. அதாவது இரண்டாம் இடத்தை பிடித்த நடிகரைக்காட்டிலும் இரண்டு மடங்கிற்கு மேற்பட்ட வாக்குகளை பெற்றாறேன்பதும் குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது. இம்முறையப்போல் மட்டுமட்டாக வெல்லவில்லை. கீழுள்ள செய்திகளை படிக்கவும்.

No Pain No Gain - Ajithkumar

Actor Ajith Kumar too is known to take risks for the stunt sequences in his movies. Sample this — for a scene in Billa 2 he hung out of a chopper even as the villain kicked and tried to push him out of it. Recently, for director Vishnuvardhan’s untitled film, Ajith had to hang on to the bonnet of a car as it tried to shake him off. “At one point, my right leg slipped off the safety ramp, the knee impacted the road, and I tore a ligament. I had injured that 10 years ago and undergone a surgery to mend it. Thanks to prompt aid and pain killers, I managed to continue the shoot,” says Ajith.
Ajith Kumar says, it is an occupational hazard. “I suppose, with all the good things that come with the profession, we should be prepared for some pains too,” he sums up.

நேற்று ஒரு தொலைக்காட்சி நிகழ்ச்சிக்கான ஷூட்டிங் இருந்தது. பொதுவாக லைவ் தொலைக்காட்சிக்குச் செல்லும்போது ஒப்பனையெல்லாம் செய்ய மாட்டார்கள். ஆனால் புதிய தலைமுறை தொலைக்காட்சியில் ஒப்பனை அறை ஒன்று உள்ளது. ஒப்பனைக் கலைஞர்களும் உள்ளனர். நமக்கு மேக்கப் போடாமல் விடமாட்டார்கள்.

கண்ணுக்குக்கீழ் கருமையைப் போக்க ஏதோ மாவைப் பூசினார். முகத்தை அழுந்தத் துடைத்துவிட்டார். புருவத்தைச் சீராக்கினார்.

நான் சிரித்தேன். ‘நான் என்ன சினிமாக்காரனா? எனக்கு எதற்கு இந்த மேக்கப் எல்லாம்? இதனால் என்ன பிரயோஜனம்?’ என்றேன்.

‘இல்ல சார், வயசை ஒரு 15 வருஷமாவது குறைச்சுக் காட்டும்’ என்றார்.

‘அது எனக்கு எதுக்கு? வயசு ஆகிட்டுத்தானே இருக்கு? முன்னாடி தலை எல்லாம் நரைக்க ஆரம்பிச்சாச்சே’ என்றேன்.

‘வேணும்னா அதை மாத்திடலாமா?’ என்றார்.

‘வேண்டாம், வேண்டாம். நான் ரஜினி மாதிரி’ என்றேன்.

‘அவரேகூட சினிமால நரைச்ச தலையோட வந்தா நீங்க ஏத்துப்பீங்களா?’ என்றார்.

‘சினிமால எப்படி வந்தாலும் நிஜ வாழ்க்கைல நரைச்ச முள்ளு தாடி, பாதி வழுக்கை ரேஞ்சில தைரியமா வராரே? அந்த மாதிரி யாரால முடியும்? கமலால முடியுமா?’ என்றேன்.

‘கமல், ரஜினி ரெண்டு பேருக்குமே நான் மேக்கப் போட்டிருக்கேன் சார்’ என்றார்.

‘ஓ, அப்படியா? அப்ப ஏன் சினிமாவ விட்டுட்டு இப்பிடி டிவிக்கு வந்திருக்கீங்க?’ என்றேன்.

‘சினிமால ஹீரோ, கேமராமேன், டைரெக்டர் இப்படி கொஞ்சம் பேருக்கு மட்டும்தான் சார் பணம். மத்தவங்களுக்கு, தினசரி பேட்டா இல்லாட்டி வாழ்க்கை ஓடாது சார். அதுவும் பேட்டாகூடக் கட்டாயமாக் கிடைக்கும்னு சொல்லமுடியாது. குடும்பம்னு வந்தாச்சு சார், இனிமேயும் சினிமால லோல்பட முடியாதுன்னு விட்டுட்டேன்.’

‘யாரோட எல்லாம் சினிமால வொர்க் பண்ணிருக்கீங்க?’

‘கமல், ரஜினி, விக்ரம், அஜித்னு தமிழ் ஹீரோக்கள் எல்லாரோடையும் வொர்க் பண்ணிட்டேன் சார். கமல்கிட்டேருந்துதான் வேலையே ஆரம்பம்.’

‘இந்த நடிகர்கள் எல்லாம் எப்படி?’

‘ஒவ்வொர்த்தர் ஒவ்வொரு மாதிரி சார். ஆனா அஜித் மாதிரி வராது சார்.’

‘ஏம்ப்பா அப்படிச் சொல்றே?’

‘அவர் ஒருத்தர்தான் சார் மனுஷனை மனுஷனா மதிக்கிறவர். மத்தவங்க மோசம்னு எல்லாம் சொல்லலை சார். ஆனா என்னவோ அஜித் ஒருத்தர மட்டும்தான் சார் இந்த மாதிரி நான் பார்த்திருக்கேன். அவர மாதிரி இன்னொருத்தர் இனிக் கிடைப்பாரான்னு தெரியலை சார். முந்தி ஜெனரேஷன்ல ஆக்டருங்க எப்படி இருந்தாங்கன்னு எனக்குத் தெரியாது சார். ஆனா இந்த ஜெனரேஷன்ல அஜித் மாதிரி ஒரு நல்ல மனிதர் யாருமே கிடையாதுன்னு சொல்வேன் சார்!’

‘அதெப்படி அப்பா அவ்வளவு ஆழமாச் சொல்லறே? அப்படி என்ன பண்ணிருக்கார்?’

‘கூட வேலை செய்யற டெக்னீஷியன்ஸை மனுஷனா வேற யாரும் மதிச்சு நான் பார்த்ததில்லை சார். மங்காத்தா பட ஷூட்டிங் மொத நாள். இந்த ஃபால்ஸ் சீலிங் போடற போர்டை வெச்சு சுவர் மாதிரி அலங்காரம் பண்ணி, அதைத் தேச்சு தேச்சு, பொடி பொடியா உதிர்ந்து இருக்கும். அந்தப் பொடி அவர் மேல விழுந்து ஒரே அழுக்கா இருக்காரு ஆர்ட்ல செட் போடற ஒருத்தர். அஜித் அங்க உள்ள வந்து நேராப் போயி அந்த ஆளைத் தொட்டு, அப்படியே தன் கை அழுக்காறதையும் கவனிக்காம, கையைக் குலுக்கி நலம் விசாரிச்சாரு சார்.’

‘அது பெரிய விஷயமாப்பா?’

‘இல்ல சார். இங்க ஏர்போர்ட்டுக்கு முன்னாடி பழைய பின்னி மில்லுல ஷூட்டிங் சார். 14 நாள் நடந்துச்சு. சாப்பாடு சரியா இல்லை. மொத நாள் மோசமான சாப்பாடு. புரடக்‌ஷன்ல சரியாப் பாத்துக்கல. அடுத்த நாள் லைட் பாய்கிட்டப் பேசிக்கிட்டிருக்கறப்ப அவருக்குத் தெரிஞ்சிடுச்சு. உடனே அன்னிக்கு வீட்டுல மட்டன் பிரியாணிக்கு ரெடி பண்ணிக்கிட்டு வந்துட்டாரு. மட்டன் பீஸ் எல்லாம் வீட்டுலயே தயார் பண்ணிக் கொண்டுவந்துட்டாரு. அரிசி ஒரு கிலோ 190 ரூபாய் சார். அவரே சமையல் பண்ணாரு.’

‘என்னப்பா விளையாடற? அவரே சமையல் பண்ணாரா, இல்லை ஆளுகளை வெச்சு சமைச்சாரா?’

‘இல்லைங்க, அவரே சமையல். ஃப்ரீயா இருந்த டெனீஷியன்களைக் கூட்டு வெங்காயம், தக்காளி வெட்டித் தரச் சொன்னாரு. அவரே அரிசியை சோம்பு, பட்டை எல்லாம் போட்டு சமைச்சு, அப்புறம் மட்டனைச் சேர்த்து பிரியாணி செஞ்சாரு.’

‘அப்புறம் என்ன ஆச்சு?’

‘மொத நாள், எங்க யாருக்குமே பீஸ் கிடைக்கல சார். வெறும் சோறு மட்டும்தான். புரடக்‌ஷன்ல ஆளுங்க வந்து பீஸ் எல்லாத்தையும் எடுத்துக்கிட்டுப் போயிட்டாங்க. டிஃபன் கேரியர்ல அள்ளிக்கிட்டுப் போயிட்டாங்க. அதுவும் அவரோட காதுக்கு அடுத்த நாள் போயிருச்சு. ஒருத்தரக் கூப்பிட்டு பிரியாணி எப்படி இருந்துச்சுன்னு கேட்டாரு. அவர் வந்து, ‘நல்லா இருந்துச்சு சார், ஆனா பீஸ்தான் கிடைக்கல. எங்களுக்கு யாருக்குமே கிடைக்கலை’னு சொன்னாரு. அன்னிக்கு அவரே திரும்ப பிரியாணி பண்ணினதுமே, புரடக்‌ஷன் மேனேஜரைக் கூப்பிட்டுச் சொல்லிட்டாரு: ‘இன்னிக்கு டிஃபன் பாக்ஸ் கட்டற வேலை எல்லாம் கிடையாது. ஏ, பி, சி அப்பிடின்னு எந்த வித்தியாசமும் இல்லாம, எல்லாரும் இங்கியே உக்கார்ந்து சேர்ந்து சாப்பிடட்டும்.’ அன்னிக்குத் தொடங்கி ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் ஷூட்டிங் முடிஞ்சதும் அவரேதான் சார் யூனிட்டுல உள்ள அத்தனை பேருக்கும் பிரியாணி செஞ்சு போடுவாரு. ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் டேஸ்டு அதிகமாகிக்கிட்டே போச்சு சார்.’

‘அப்புறம்?’

‘அப்புறம் ஷூட்டிங்குக்கு ஹைதராபாத் போனோம் சார். அங்க சமையல் செய்ய முடியாதுங்கறதுனால, அவரோட சொந்தக் காசுல, கிரீன் பாவர்ச்சின்னு ஒரு ஹோட்டல் சார். அதுலேர்ந்து அத்தனை பேருக்கும் பிரியாணி வாங்கிக் கொடுத்தாரு. ஒரு பிரியாணிய நாலு பேர் சாப்பிடலாம். ஹைதராபாத்ல ஷூட்டிங் முடியறவரை அங்கேருந்துதான் சாப்பாடே.’

‘சாப்பாடு மட்டும்தானா?’

‘இல்ல சார். தீபாவளி சமயத்துல ஒவ்வொருத்தருக்கும் 3,000 ரூபாய்க்கு வெடி, ஆளுக்கு 500 ரூபாய் கேஷ் கொடுத்தாரு சார். அப்புறம் பொங்கல் சமயத்துல ஒவ்வொரு டெக்னீஷியனுக்கும் கால் பவுன் தங்கத்துல மோதிரம் வாங்கிப் போட்டாரு சார். வருஷப் பொறப்புக்கு...’

இப்படித் தொடர்ந்துகொண்டே போனார். கமல், ரஜினி போன்றவர்கள் தனிப்பட்ட முறையில் பலருக்கு உதவி செய்துள்ளதையும் சுட்டிக் காட்டினார். ஆனால் அஜித் அளவுக்குத் தான் யாரையுமே பார்த்ததில்லை என்றார்.

செட்டில், உடல் நலம் சரியில்லாமல் யாரேனும் வேலைக்கு வரவில்லை என்றால் உடனே தன் மேனேஜரை அனுப்பி, என்ன விஷயம் என்று தெரிந்துகொண்டு, உடல் நலக் குறைவுக்கு ஏற்றார்போலப் பணம் அனுப்பிவைப்பாராம். கூட வேலை செய்வோரை அண்ணே என்றுதான் அழைப்பாராம்.

‘Thalai’ sends heads rolling

In an exclusive chat, Ajith tells why he disbanded fan clubs. Fans plan protest march in Chennai.
Birthdays are august occasions for the stars to boost their image and fan following. But not for Ajith. On his 40th birthday last Sunday, the Tamil actor – popularly called Thalai — did the unthinkable by deciding to disband his all his fan clubs across the state.  Remember, Ajith has the most number of fan clubs after Rajinikanth in Tamil Nadu.  What was the trigger? For the first time after he took the “shocking decision”, Thalai has opened up to Bangalore Mirror, “It was a tough decision, but I had to take it. My fans associations have always been involved in philanthropic work. I really took pride in that. But of late, especially during the election time, I came to know that some members of my fans’ association had started misusing my name with reference to certain political parties. I came to know that even some monetary transactions took place in the context.”    Though the actor has not named any particular party, it is learnt that some of the fans have started campaigning for the AIADMK-led front.   The actor said, “I am finishing my 50th film Mankatha. I shall be failing in my duty if I fail to sincerely thank all those who have been associated in shaping my career so far. I thank all my fans, directors and well-wishers.”  He added, “I have never exploited my fans’ goodwill for professional or personal advancement.”  Calling a spade a spade has been Ajith’s hallmark always. Last year, when the entire Tamil film fraternity had gathered in Chennai with a view to honouring  Chief Minister Karunanidhi, Ajith had shocked everyone by his plain talk. Starting from Rajinikanth to Kamal, all the stars showered praises on the DMK leader. Ajith said film stars, who are busy shooting elsewhere, should not be forced to attend such felicitations as it not only disturbs the work schedule, but also enhances the cost of production. The entire stadium fell silent before Rajinikanth rose from his seat and started clapping, much to the surprise of the crowd. Sources say fans from Sivagangai are now planning to meet Ajith and request him to reconsider his decision. Are Tamil actors getting jittery about their fan clubs? Ajith, one of the most popular stars in Tamil cinema with a huge fan base, has recently issued a press statement disbanding his fan clubs.

On the eve of his 40th birthday (he celebrates his birthday today), the star stated that while he appreciated his fans’ work and dedication, it would be better for them to keep it apolitical. It looks like the actor has come to know that his fan clubs are being used to further the interests of certain political parties. The actor added that he had never used or exploited his fans for personal gain. However, he’s under tremendous pressure to reconsider his decision as it comes as a shock for fans who were planning to celebrate the actor’s birthday in a grand manner.

The star has taken a bold step to disband his well-oiled fan clubs, which are spread all over the state. He’s not the first actor to be troubled by such clubs. In Tamil Nadu, the mighty fans’ associations have always been a lucrative vote bank right from the days of MGR. In fact, Vijayakanth built his political career on the strength of his fan clubs.

The pressure on actors like Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan from their fans to dive into the murky world of Tamil politics has forced the icons to play down their fan base. Associating with these actors seems to be on top of the priority list for politicians, most of whom made a beeline to Rajinikanth’s residence to get his blessings during the recent assembly polls.

Says Madurai-based Kumaravel, who has been affiliated to various fan clubs, “In the 80s and 90s, genuine fans used to spend money from their pocket to put up cut-outs of his hero. They also used to feed the poor on the day of release and generate an opening for the star. Today, professional politicians have hijacked the fan clubs and are using it to make money and cultivate vote banks.”

Meanwhile, a source close to Ajith says, “A majority of his admirers feel that he has taken the right decision, considering today’s highly-politicised atmosphere. Posters lauding his efforts have come up in Madurai. One of them say, ‘Thaliva, Ennaku Padaviyum Vendam, Iyakkam Vendam. Ungal Idayathil Idam Mattum Podum’ (’We don’t want any post, any club. All we want is a place in your heart.’) That mirrors the feelings of the genuine fan, who brings real happiness to Ajith sir.”

Why Ajith dissolved his Fans Club?

 It has been an unceasing request from Thala to his fans on not to misuse his name and identity for the sake of their personal interests. This is not a decision taken just on the spur of moment, but our ‘Thala’ has been patiently discussing this issue with his close associates, family members and friends.

The closer sources reveal that it was before three months that ‘Thala’ started thinking over this plan. During the political election phase, some of the members of fans club from various parts of Tamil Nadu got themselves engaged in the corruption as they supported some political parties getting money and used ‘Ajith Fans Club’ brand during recent Tamil nadu elections.

As the issue reached the office of Ajith Kumar, he was shocked and quite disappointed with the fans for he has been ardently requesting them on not to misuse his name.

Now he has decided to connect with his diehard followers through an official website. The plans are going on and this will enable them to get connected with their ‘Thala’ without any interruptions.

But for us as Ajith fans, it is a real shame that some of the members have been a spoiler and disappointed him.
